Air freight grows 5.1% globally and 4.7% in Europe, IATA reveals.

Air freight traffic continued to grow in the European market during the first four months of the year. According to the latest results published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), tons of cargo per kilometer transported (FTK) increased by 4.7% by April. In total, overall air cargo traffic improved by 5.1% in tonnes of cargo per kilometer transported, and in terms of tonnes of freight per available kilometer, grew by 4.4% by April. Although transported cargo volumes have recovered slightly in April, the pace of demand growth, IATA explains, is still slower now than in much of 2017.
The Asia-Pacific region continues to dominate air cargo handling activity, with a worldwide share of 37%. Tons of freight carried per kilometer transported increased by 4.7% and in terms of cargo capacity by 5.4% by April. On the other hand, the volume of cargo of the American airlines grew 5.4% between January and April. Capacity increased by 4.5% over the same period.
With a market share of 13.7%, freight traffic in the Middle East increased by 4.9% and tonne freight per available kilometer increased by 5.8%. Finally, Latin American airlines, representing 2.7% of the market, experienced an improvement in demand of 10.7% and in Africa, growth was 7%.
