Airfreight: supply grows faster than demand
Portugal
The world market for airfreight grew by 2% in September. Slightly below August's 2.3% and well below the 5.1% average of the last five years, IATA advises. In addition, capacity supply grew by 3.2% compared to September last year. It was, according to IATA, the seventh consecutive month in which the increase of the offer was superior to the demand of air cargo.
Growth in the sector is based on a number of factors, such as consumer confidence, improved global investment and growing international e-commerce. The association indicates, however, that demand was negatively affected by declining exports in all markets, with the exception of the USA. The longer delivery times in Europe and Asia also made air transport less necessary.
All regional markets grew in September, apart from Africa. The Asia-Pacific market experienced a 1.2% increase in demand and also a 1.2% increase in cargo capacity. During the ninth month of the year, North America had a 1.5% increase in demand and a 4.9% increase in capacity. In Europe, air cargo registered growth of 1.5% in volumes and 0.5% in capacity. In Latin America, cargo volumes increased by 2.9% and capacity 4.3%. In the Middle East, demand increased by 6.6%, down from 7.7% in capacity. For Africa, demand fell by 2.1% and capacity increased by 6.2% in September.
