European Union postpones until 2025 customs without papers
Portugal
The proposed transition period for EU customs to eliminate paper customs procedures has been extended from 2020 to 2025. The deadline has been called for by the Commission to the European Parliament.

The EU countries are working to install the 17 electronic systems admitted by the Union Customs Code (CAU), in force since 2016. However, it is likely that by 2020 only the installation of 80% of the systems will be completed, in addition to systems must also be interlinked for the harmonization of data. This extension of the period for five years then allows for a quieter change, in addition to ensuring the normal functioning of customs until 2025.

The Community authorities believe that the CAU will facilitate contacts between economic operators and the customs authorities, as well as between the customs authorities themselves, by speeding up and simplifying the customs clearance of goods.
