IDC threatens to internationalize conflict in Leixões
Portugal
The IDC (International Council of Port Workers) threatens to mobilize its associates, especially in Europe, against the alleged anti-union practices in Leixões.
Following a complaint by the SEAL - which led to a 24-hour shutdown at the national ports last Friday - IDC warned in a public statement that if the situation persists, it will mobilize workers from other European ports to press shipping lines that climb in Portugal, and in particular in Leixões. IDC files its complaints with the SEAL and denounces the alleged discriminatory and persecuting practices of the port workers who, in Leixões, belong to or intend to belong to the national syndicate syndicate. The 530 workers affiliated to the SEAL fulfilled, according to the union, the 24-hour strike between 8 am on Friday and 8 am on Saturday against the alleged anti-union practices, in particular in Leixões and in Caniçal.
Result: the ports of Lisbon, Setúbal, Figueira da Foz and Praia da Vitoria stopped completely.
In Caniçal, the SEAL denounced the alleged attempt to replace striking workers, which prompted the intervention of the Maritime Police and the Labor Inspectorate. There were few movements. In Leixões, the reports diverged, between normality and serious delays in operations. A new strike is scheduled for August 13, now for four weeks, until 10 September. The stoppage is only for supplementary work, but it will have no effect.
