IRU criticizes lead of Mobility Package.

The International Union of Road Transport (IRU) regrets that the European Parliament has, for the second time, adopted the amendments proposed by the Committee on Transport to the Mobility Package.
After the first vote on 14 June, the Chamber returned last week to not reach an agreement. According to the IRU, MEPs "presented themselves with unbalanced reports that revealed a limited willingness to find compromises".
This means restarting the parliamentary process of the Mobility Package, presented by Commissioner Violeta Bulc over a year ago. In this scenario, for IRU, this was a missed opportunity to provide a practical and balanced framework for future negotiations with the Council and the Commission. "Now the debates are back to the beginning and the incentives to find solutions during this legislative mandate are very limited," they lament from the organization. Matthias Maedge, IRU representative in Brussels, warns that "the European Parliament has lost precious time" and that now workable solutions can take years in a period when transport must continue to face different national rules. "Now is the time to rethink the purpose of the Mobility Package and the ambitions that the European Commission has until the end of the mandate," he says.
The main measures proposed in the proposal for a reform of the European road transport market included the updating of drivers' driving and rest times, the new regulation on cabotage and the revision of the policy on the posting of drivers. Issues that deeply divide the European road haulage sector
