Portugal is 14th in European freight transport by road

Portugal occupied the middle of the list of 29 European states in road freight transport in 2016, highlighting bilateral traffic and between third countries.
 
According to data from the study carried out by the French National Road Committee (CNR) on the sector in the EU28 + Malta, the activity of Portuguese transporters, measured in ton-km, grew by 9.6% in 2016 compared to 2015, place in the global ranking.
 
Considering only national traffic, Luso carriers ranked 18th, with a decrease of 3.8% in production.
 
On the contrary, the international activity was up, with a year-on-year increase of 16.4% to guarantee the 11th position. In the bilateral trade, Portugal was 6th (fruit of the integration of the Iberian economy), with a production growth of 14%. But it was in transport between third countries that the activity grew the most (24.9% in ton-km), with Portugal occupying the 8th place in the ranking. In cabotage, the national carriers were 11º, with a rise of 9,1% compared to 2015.
