Spain ended the first toll on motorways
Portugal
Since Saturday, the Spanish motorway AP-1 has stopped tolls in the 84 kilometers of the section between Burgos and Armiñón.

The decision of the Spanish government to end the tolls on that route follows the end of the concession contract. From now on, the management and conservation of the section is the responsibility of the Ministry of Development. This is the first time that a motorway in Spain is no longer so. But it will certainly not be the last.

The commitment of the Government of Spain is that the concessions that end in this legislature will not be prolonged, nor will they be taken again to contests. Infrastructure management will pass into the hands of public bodies and there will be no private concessionaires. The next motorways to become free will be the AP-7 Tarragona-Alicante and the AP-4 Seville-Cadiz. But this only from 31 December next year.

In total, the Spanish executive proposes to end tolls in 468 kilometers of tolls. In the meantime, it studies a new payment model for the use of roadways to finance its maintenance.
