The UNCTAD - United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warns: ports on a global scale should be prepared for the myriad of gigantic challenges that climate change will pose.
At the latest global climate summit at COP24 in the Polish city of Katowice, Regina Asariotis, Head of Policy and Legislation at UNCTAD, pointed out that global trade is at risk if ports do not become 'climate change proof'. "The hardest hit areas, coastal areas, will have effects for all of us, as most of the world trade is by ship," he recalled, adding that ports around the world are very exposed to the potential impact of climate change.
"Changes in sea level, temperature, humidity, precipitation or extreme storms, floods and other climatic factors are likely to affect seaports as well as all connected global transport infrastructure networks. Understanding impacts and developing effective adaptation measures is critical, "said the head of the United Nations agency. It is recalled that the United Nations' 9th Sustainable Development Goal already calls on the global community for the need to build resilient infrastructures.
